Description:
The Collins Building stands at the corner of Second Avenue and James Street in the Pioneer Square Historic District. Built in 1893, it was one of the first new buildings completed in Seattle after the Great Fire of 1889. Designed by architect Arthur Bishop Chamberlain in the Richardsonian Romanesque Style, it was built on a site previously occupied by the home of John Collins, a Seattle industrial entrepreneur and former Mayor.
A 2001 renovation preserved the Collins Building’s unique interior features, including its exposed brick walls, original wainscoting, and an elegant wrought iron elevator cab with a glass enclosure. This renovation also included a complete seismic upgrade and the addition of modern-day life-safety features and enhanced mechanical, electrical, and communications systems. The law firm of Cairncross & Hempelmann, a major tenant in the building, added an expansive private roof deck with views of Puget Sound and the adjacent Smith Tower.
The Collins Building offers easy access to public transportation. The Yesler Way and James Street entrances to the Pioneer Square Link light rail tunnel are only a few steps away. The building is within walking distance of King County Metro and Sound Transit bus stops, the Seattle Streetcar to First Hill, the Washington State Ferry terminal, and the King County Water Taxi. Two parking garages are located across the street, providing easy access for Collins Pub and Gary Manuel Salon customers.
