Description:
Located on the corner of 3rd Avenue and Lenora Street in Belltown, the Army Building is within walking distance of the downtown Seattle shopping district and Pike Place Market. It is adjacent to two large parking lots, and is only three blocks away from both the Westlake Center Link light rail tunnel station and the Seattle Streetcar to South Lake Union.
The Army Building is a historic Mission-style structure, with large arched windows and a red tile parapet. Built in 1923, it was designed by noted architect George Wellington Stoddard. The building was originally called the Metropolitan Press Building, after its first occupants, the Metropolitan Printing Press Company. It was at this location that our founder, Samuel Israel, repaired shoes for the U.S. Army during World War II, and it was one of the first buildings he purchased.
The Army Building was completely renovated in 1997, and was designated a City of Seattle Landmark in 2008. As Belltown has transformed, the building has persisted as a window into the past and an architectural gem.
